SGB-SMIT POWER MATLA proudly flies the flag for South African transformer manufacturing, securing a multi-million-dollar contract to supply hundreds of transformers for the US market. For the first time in history, a South African transformer OEM is designing, manufacturing, and supplying distribution transformers to a utility customer in the US market. To achieve this milestone, SGB-SMIT POWER MATLA must meet the customer’s specifications and strict international quality standards. The transformers comply with the US Department of Energy (DOE), the American National Standard (ANSI) as well as the IEEE Standard.

The distribution transformers are going to be delivered in the first half of 2023 and will be installed in the utility’s network. Distribution transformers provide the final voltage transformation in the electric power distribution system, stepping down the voltage used in the distribution lines to levels used by the customers. This contract award has proven that SGB-SMIT POWER MATLA has the experience, expertise, and capabilities to meet the customer’s requirements.

Each unit is custom-built from standardized design elements, using consistent manufacturing processes. This flexible but well-coordinated approach ensures the highest quality of design and construction for all our transformers, making the most of the valuable knowledge and experience gained over the years and the best practices developed in our factory.

SGB-SMIT POWER MATLA is excited to enter a new territory but remains strongly focused on the local market in South Africa. This order for the US-market will enable SGB‑SMIT POWER MATLA to make a valuable contribution to energy security in the future, not only for South Africa, but for the international community. The entire SGB-SMIT GROUP is very proud that SGB-SMIT POWER MATLA contributes to reliable and sustainable energy supply with its long-life transformers.
